Dr. Lopez grew up in Sarasota, Florida and attended Florida State University where he earned degrees in Chemistry and Biochemistry (both summa cum laude) with minors in Mathematics and Biology. He was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and had the opportunity to study abroad in Valencia, Spain.
He attended the Morsani College of Medicine at the University of South Florida where he served as class co-president all four years and was awarded admission into the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He completed a scholarly concentration in research and received numerous awards including the Carol M. Petrucelli MD Outstanding Student in Dermatology Award, the Luther McEachern Memorial Award, and the Stephen K. Klasko Dean's Award for Leadership.
After graduating medical school, he completed an internship in Internal Medicine in Chicago, Illinois and subsequently spent three years completing his Dermatology Residency at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He then completed a one-year fellowship in Mohs Micrographic Surgery and Dermatologic Oncology with world-renowned Drs. Randall Roenigk, Clark Otley, Christopher Arpey, Christian Baum, and Jerry Brewer.
He is double board-certified with certifications in both Dermatology and Micrographic (Mohs) Dermatologic Surgery, both through the American Board of Dermatology. He has published and spoken extensively on Mohs surgery, wound healing, reconstructive surgery, basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, melanoma, rare skin cancers, and management of complex skin cancers.
Since completing his fellowship, Dr. Lopez has personally performed over 10,000 Mohs micrographic surgery procedures. In 2025 he performed 1,757 Mohs cases, including 1,288 on the head, neck, or other anatomically sensitive sites where reconstruction technique determines the cosmetic outcome. He also performs approximately 100 slow Mohs procedures per year for melanoma in situ and select early invasive melanomas.
Dr. Lopez performs 99% of his own reconstructions, including local flaps, full-thickness skin grafts, and multi-stage repairs. He accepts referrals from dermatologists, primary care physicians, plastic surgeons, oculoplastic surgeons, facial plastic surgeons, and radiation oncologists across Tampa Bay.
